The terms “steam room” and “sauna” are frequently used interchangeably. However, there is a difference between these two that you should know about. The primary differences between steam rooms and infrared saunas are the way they heat up and the temperature. They were steaming heat up the room, whereas infrared saunas heat objects.
Steam rooms are also known as wet or moist saunas, where you can see steam coming out of an area in the vicinity. Unlike infrared saunas, there are no dry spaces for this steam to emit from, which have ceramic stones on their floor, ceiling, and walls to emit and produce heat. Compared to infrared saunas, steam rooms have a higher humidity level at 100% ambient humidity. They also have a much lower temperature level of around 70-105 degrees Fahrenheit (22-40 degrees Celsius). In contrast, infrared saunas have a lower humidity level of between 10%-60%. They also have a temperature range of up to 170 degrees Fahrenheit (93.3 degrees Celsius). Infrared saunas are also known as dry saunas, where people do not see the steam escape. This is because small holes on the floor, ceiling, and walls act like radiators that emit infrared radiation that produces heat. Both steam rooms and infrared saunas utilize elevated heat to heat the air inside. However, steam rooms heat the air through the vaporization of water on hot surfaces, while infrared saunas heat objects in the room. Steam rooms use relatively hotter temperatures compared to infrared saunas. As a result, steam rooms are most often found in health clubs, gyms, and spas, while infrared saunas are more popular in homes. However, there is no major difference between the two regarding the ability to provide therapeutic benefits. Both can be used for relaxation and detoxification purposes, including easing muscle aches and pains, improving skin appearance, boosting the immune system, increasing energy levels, increasing blood circulation, and relieving stress and anxiety. Steam rooms and infrared saunas can be used interchangeably, but if you want to follow the conventional wisdom, steam rooms are for hot wet treatments, while infrared saunas are better suited for dry heat treatments. The main thing that will determine which one you decide to get will be what’s more important to you: the ability to make it as hot as possible or the ability to sit in a dry air environment.
